Our Goals, and Roles as Coaches and Athletes

Foster Individual Improvement:

Improvement can be measured in a number of ways, but ultimately we want our athletes to walk away with a greater sense of purpose in life. This sport is one of the most physically, and mentally demanding in the entire athletic landscape. Learning how to be committed and dedicated to something helps reveal crucial life lessons that will resonate in our lives as students, and also one day as adults. 

Team Cohesion:

Building a strong sense of team unity and camaraderie is crucial. Our program aims to create an inclusive and supportive team culture, where athletes encourage and uplift one another. A cohesive team can create a positive training environment and enhance overall performance. Winning a cross country meet doesn’t just reflect what the top 1 or 5 runners do in a race. It’s calculated on the top 6-8 runners and where they match up with other teams top 6-8 runners. We don’t win without everyone being on the same page. 

Communication and Feedback:

Throughout the season things will pop up, and absences will occur. The biggest part here is that we need to communicate those things IN WRITING a few days ahead of time if there is a planned absence. Obviously sickness, and injury is something we can’t always plan, but an email, text, or in person conversation will be expected by either Coach Minnihan or myself. 

In regards to feedback, Coach Minnihan and I will provide you feedback in practice, in the weightroom, and in the “athletic arena” both before and after if need be. Taking constructive criticism at times is difficult, but we need everyone to be on the same page, both parents and athletes, and it will always be from a growth mindset perspective.

Competitive Excellence:

Striving for excellence in competition is a natural objective. Our program will be consistently competitive in races and championships at the local, regional, and state levels. This means implementing effective training strategies and race tactics, as well as holding ourselves and our teammates accountable for things that happen outside of practice and competition. This includes diet, sleep, schoolwork, and mental preparation for what lies ahead.

Social Media

We strongly encourage parents to film/record/take pictures of our boys team running during our meets. Pictures can be uploaded to google drive and sent to Coach Micholic. I will turn the folder into a shared drive so everybody can have access. 

Shoe Information

If you are not sure about shoes, here are some brand and model ideas. If you tend to have trouble with shin splints, it’s a good idea to get a stability or support model.

Things to know:

• All levels of experience are welcome!
• All communication to parents/guardians/players is held through the Remind Messaging App. Sign-up for Remind to receive announcements from Coach Rocheleau, Coach Oosterhuis, or coach Hubbard
• Practices will start on August 13th, 2023.
• Summer practices will be scheduled as follows:
  • August 13th – the start of season practices 8:00-10:00a.m.
  • Start of school we start regular “school” hour practices 3:00-5:00pm
  • All practices will be held at the courts Mon-Fri) or possibly Greenheck if rain
  • Please be to practice on time! 15 minutes prior to start time is expected.
  • If you are going to be gone for a practice/meet you must communicate with a coach.
  • A more specific schedule will be provided when we know numbers and season details.
  • Freshman players : A bus will go from the Jr. High to the Sr. High                               
• Equipment needed:
  • All athletes will need to bring their own tennis racquets
  • Tennis shoes
  • For meets: Varsity players will have a uniform. JV players should wear a solid black pair of shorts or a skort, along with a D.C. Everest logo shirt. (Not labeled with another sport).
  • Water bottle (it’s hot out on the tennis court!) Stay hydrated!

Tennis balls are provided at practices, however it’s never bad to have a few in your tennis bag.

What is cross country? 
Cross country is a long-distance running sport. We run on trails, roads, grass, hills, and in all weather, including rain. We have a 2-mile race once per week at different locations during the season. 

Who should come out for cross country?
Anyone who is interested in running! It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are - we are here to help everyone improve. However ALL runners should be able to run for 20 minutes without stopping by the start of the season. If you haven’t been active over the summer, you will find it very difficult to suddenly start running 4-5 days a week and your chance of getting injured increases significantly.

When does the season start and where is practice? 
The season starts at 3pm on Monday August 26th at the Junior High. There will be a brief 15 minute parent meeting at 3pm at the junior high.

During school, practices run from 3-4:45pm, Mon-Fri. Middle school students will ride the bus to the junior high for practice. Pick up after practice and meets is ALWAYS at the junior high.

Labor Day weekend 
There is no practice on Labor day weekend: Friday August 30th & Monday Sept. 2nd.

You will have access to this at the start of the season. 
Please make sure you have notifications turned on for any updates for class dismissal times, meet times, practice updates etc.
